A New Year of Beginnings

Hello all!!!  Happy New Year!  Well it will soon be:)  I'm having a blast out in the field on my time off. And it's because of this change in my life that I won't be able to blog everyday like I have for the past 2 years.
Osprey at Kennedy Park, Tucson
It has finally caught up with me and I'm finding that the daily writing etc is impossible:)  I will be posting when I get the chance and of course reading all of your work.  It's one of the reasons why I started blogging .... to network with all of you.
I want to enjoy that part again without worrying about posting once a day.  There's a lot to look forward to next year at Las Aventuras and I am so excited for the schedule coming up, but you'll have to wait and see all the happenings that will be going on.
For now, I wanted to share with you....finally!....a most accidental and wonderful thing....the Osprey.  After many many outings trying to find this bird in Tucson, it came out of nowhere while I was searching for a Horned Grebe.  No Horned Grebe.....but who cares!  The Osprey was the star of the show.
I also got closer to the Western Grebe than I have been able to since my search for them.  Las Aventuras has a trek coming up from outside of the state of Arizona.  I hope you'll join me as we discover even more birds than before.......I'm not going anywhere:)  I'll just be out in the field A WHOLE lot more:)
Western Grebe
My goal for this next year is to add about 150 more birds to my list.  I think it's achievable.
So how about something new?  How about the Hooded Mergansers!  There were 18 on this day.
Hooded Mergansers at Sam Lena Park
The males(or drakes) look like aliens while the females look quite the opposite....but still....striking.  Both genders made me do a double take.  They look so different from each other!  How could they both possibly be the same bird??!!!  And yet they are.
Las Aventuras isn't going anywhere in the blogoshere, it's just doing what it does best....exploring strange new life and new civilizations and boldly forcing me to go where I've never gone before.  Happy New Year everyone!

What's In A Name Anyway?

Celebrating year two of "Las Aventuras" has been something of a work of love and art.  So where did the name come from?  What does it all mean?

"Las Aventuras" was a title that stuck in my head for a long time.  I'm a Spanish instructor and have travelled all over the world with photos and useless information that friends and family don't really care about....except me:)  So the title speaks of adventure through my eyes.  For many years, I would travel everywhere and take pictures without having a place to show them. My students benefit from this knowledge as do I, but that's really about as far as it went. "Las Aventuras" demonstrates the duality in my own life.  Spanish instructor by day; gardener at heart; a photographer, explorer and wilderness aficionado on the weekends and vacation.
Pepe, the Howler Monkey in the Amazon of Peru

When coming up with the name, I thought "Las Aventuras" was a better name than "The Adventures". I know some bloggers look at the title and think, "Oh Spanish....yuck!!:)"  Years ago Spanish dictated my life.  Today it is "fused" into my being and it's difficult to differentiate my Wisconsin and Mexican sides.  Some of my friends call me a "Bean Burrito"...white on the outside; all beany on the inside.  I'm not sure that's politically correct, but there is a message for students.  If a boy from Wisconsin could speak Spanish fluently, so could they!
Cuzco, Pero
The exotic sound....because words are sounds....of "Las Aventuras" rolls off the tongue better than the English translation.  The truth is that we all live our adventures in different ways.  I choose for this blog to focus on the adventures of the garden, the unknown, the unexplored, travel, nature and the mystery of what is to come.  The title leaves it open for interpretation and doesn't limit me to one particular thing and allows me to track the garden progress around El Presidio.
My camera equipment and photography skills get stronger...
If there are words that can describe this blog, it's about our inner beauty dealing with the crazy routines of our busy lives.  It's finding the time to create art and the adventure that surrounds it all.  I have a lot of questions that need answering and I will pursue those answers until my final moments of life. So I travel and travel and travel to places that have some mystery left behind them.  And it's my personal adventure of self discovery and an awakening to an inner peace that I haven't felt for a very long time. Plus writing is therapeutic. "Las Aventuras" sums all of these attitudes into a place for all to share. And....it feels good.

Las Aventuras Celebrates Year 2!

I can't believe I began two years ago!!  It seems longer.  Last year, my mission was to write a post(or two) a day featuring articles from the garden and travel(among other things).
I took this at Gates Pass before titling my work.
I still share my frustrations with the garden here.  There always seems to be something going on and it is enjoyable to watch.  Our oak trees are still a mess....especially this time of year.  Random things die and random things grow.  The stable plants like Heavenly Bamboo and Oleander grow larger and larger every year creating borders.  I've become more fascinated with solar technology and birding around our garden.  And while the changes are slow, they are happening.  While Las Aventuras turns 2, this will be my 4th year taking over the maintenance for the grounds.  Last year was all about the removal of plants damaging building structure.  This year will be about placing appropriate plants in the right spaces and pruning several plants back for a fuller look in late spring and early summer.  At this point, I will begin to wean the plants from the regular water they required while they were young. Around half of the property has now established itself and requires very little maintenance.

Last year it was challenging to write a post everyday with my regular job.  There is never a lack of topics to explore or photograph....just never enough time to do it all.  It took a little scheduling to stay on top of it all and keep ahead of myself.  This year I have relaxed a bit on writing everyday allowing the blog to post fresh articles right off the press:)  It was also last year that I discovered that I was posting a lot of work about NASA and our amazing universe.  I decided it wasn't appropriate to post these passions on Las Aventuras.  And with great hesitation, I created Spatial Intelligence.  I would give my life to travel the cosmos.  As a child, dinosaurs, Egyptians and our universe have fascinated me.  Today, I've added several other items to that list:)
There were times where I wanted to scream because blogging became more of a chore and there were several posts that absolutely bored me, and yet today they help a lot of Tucsonans and those other people north of us:)  I found that trying to write during the holiday season is almost impossible.  I also found that doing a photo shoot in December is also impossible.  Luckily, I had planned for that and took the month of November off to relax a bit from writing.

My blogging friends.  I am so grateful for you all with your help on articles and ideas from over these past couple years.  I've learned so much from you all and it is sad when several people from the blogosphere disappear and never return.  Some people blog for a moment, others blog for enjoyment, and for others, their blogging is a lifetime committment.  Mine is the latter as it will chronicle my journeys in life.  I have a LOOOOOOOONG list of things to accomplish and we are just getting warmed up for travels both near and far. So thank you friends for all your support.  I really enjoy your comments and stories.  There is so much more to share.  Until next time.....

Where the Wind Blows....

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and that you're eating lots of good food and creating great memories watching football games, going on hikes, or just enjoying that precious time with your family.  The diet can start tomorrow:)
December has mostly been reflective in my writing with some artsy posts which also included, hopefully, some helpful info for people exploring gardening ideas in Tucson along with some travel fun around the state and beyond. Last year I made a resolution....one post each day with quality work behind it.  This year, I will slow down a little....just a little:)....and not be so hard on myself.  There were some intense times as I fought to keep up with my deadlines, find important information, and interview people for data etc.  AND KEEP UP WITH MY GARDENING!!  Epic fail:)
I'm going to be posting at a slower rate this year so I may not publish a story or report everyday, but I'll still be around working on this extremely fun hobby.  So no stress if you don't see a post at 2 AM in the morning here in the States.  I'm okay, just taking it slower:)  I had two moments of pure blogger hatred. During the months of July and November, I found that I didn't want to look at the program! OR pick up my camera!  But then my writer's itch would come back and I'd start doing it all over again.  As the title suggests, this year you'll see some great stuff as trips are being planned out and I'll be all over the place.  Who knows?  Maybe I'll be in your neck of the woods this year! It all has to do with my past and connections to old friends....so stay tuned for what will sure to be some exciting adventure both in the garden and around our amazing country.  This month I have several features on some Tucson plants, the garden, and some memoirs I found in a box last month.  Happy New Year to everyone!  May this year bring us all happiness and health!

Happy New Year from Las Aventuras!!!

Taken in Parfrey's Glen in Wisconsin back in '98.  It all started with an idea and a question.  What more is there? Let's find out.

I'd like to wish all my followers a Happy New Year!!!  It has been an incredible year blogging for Las Aventuras.  Of course there is more to come next year, but for now, I thought it would be fun to recap this years highlights and put it all into a video.  It's hard to express how much work went into this blog when it all was really fun to put together.  However, I did have moments of frustration and some screaming was involved.....especially on the posts that were erased after several hours of work! Be safe and we'll see you back next year for more fun and exciting adventures around the Tucson garden.....and beyond!

One Year

A full year has passed today and this blog celebrates its' first birthday. Taking a break from the tree series, today I reflect on why I got started and where I'm going with this extremely addicting hobby.

When I first began, I just thought I would start with a weekly write, but as I developed the content, I realized there was a lot to record and keep track of in the garden.  Years of knowledge and experience had been kept inside this brain of mine.  At first, I started to write and later discovered over the course of several months that I needed to keep my topics focused and in a specific order.  The titles were too long and incomplete which often didn't reflect the feeling of the write. Over time, I found that single to several word titles would be the norm. As I began to write more, more things came to my mind, more information presented itself to me as I went through years of journals and pictures from all over the world.  Whenever I travel, I always take a lot of pics of gardens and plants that people don't necessarily care about and so I put these pics into a file for "later on".  Well I discovered that "later on" meant that I would eventually put these into a blog even though I didn't really know what blogging was about at the time. On a personal note, I was happy that many of these pictures would see eyes again. For an example, one day on the Inka trail in Machu Picchu, I went ahead of the group just so I could snap pictures of plants without disruption. It was the 3rd day of the hike in a cloud forest and I needed total concentration to snap pics of the local flora. That's how addicted I am to plants and their environments. This June, I purposely put several days into my Panama trip so that I could work a couple days alone in the field.  I have several plant centers lined up for exploration.   This also allows me some technical talk that usually bores most people.

In the beginning, I used pictures from the internet on my writes, but discovered that taking your own pictures were better and demonstrated what it was that I was talking about....plus I found that it also kept a visual record of the garden. The picture quality drove me nuts....scanning old pics and the use of older cameras was now out of the "picture".  My mother always said that if you're going to do something; do it right.  Around July of 2010, I got fed up with my terrible cameras while using my Mom's excellent camera on a trip home to Wisconsin.  Once I arrived back in Arizona, I purchased a superior quality camera that I now use today for some great shots.  Basic cameras are okay for some things but not for macro shots of leaves, insects or video recordings, lighting, etc.  The camera was a MUST and I didn't regret the purchase at all.

I went undetected for quite awhile on the internet.  I didn't know how to find fellow gardener's blogs or how they would find me.  It was a difficult time because I needed to connect with the garden community.  Many people enjoyed what I did outside my "normal" job but didn't care to talk about plants, which I understand, but like people who love football, it would be great to have a community to chat with about our gardens. Later in the year, I began going through a personal change in my life.  I left my Special Needs job of 15 years and kept my 15 year Spanish teacher position.  I signed up for Docent classes in August at the Tucson Botanical Gardens and reignited another kind of spark in my life....one of enjoyment. Every weekend I went to my Saturday morning classes and discovered that there were a lot of people who shared the same passion as I did.  We spoke of plants and experiments in our own backyards and I discovered that I had a lot of experience to share with people.  A confidence came to me during this training period and it taught me many things.  This time I had a badge and certificate that said, "You can do this Chris."  How many of us are trapped by life's decisions?  How many of us would love to try something different?  This blog opened a door for me and it continues to keep opening.....

What will happen to the Reed Islands of Lake Titicaca and the Uros people?
Another part about this experience has been my love of writing, investigation, and photography.  Ever since I have been a child, I have been fascinated by stories both real and imaginary.  Secretly, I have discovered that the imaginary stories with fantastical creatures are allusions to other cultures here on our planet, and the more I travel, the more connections I make.  Sadly, another focus of mine are the indigenous people of this world.  What you see in the Middle East is an example of what technology is doing across our globe......it's educating people and you can't stop this progression.  However, don't think that this doesn't affect us......it is.  Our education system and the way people are viewing the world has changed.....look at my home state of Wisconsin and the battle that has only begun.  We are looking at a global shift of attitude and views.....and I haven't a clue how this will turn out, but it is kind of exciting. So what about the indigenous people of our world?  I have noticed that their children are leaving for this modern day culture and abandoning their families.  Take for the example, the Uros people of Lake Titicaca.  For centuries, they have lived on floating reed islands.  Today their children are leaving for the port town of Puno to get a college education.  The floating islands within several decades will be a thing of the past....or kept as a museum of what was. As the Amazon is encroached upon by human development, tribes are seeing the outside world for the first time.  I know it's hard to believe, but there are still a few places in this world that have been kept sacred and hidden......but that's changing. Where will it all go?

Finally, my blog started getting a little internet attention around May of last year.... even though I had been writing since March.  At first it was a few people.....10 clicks a day....15.....and then around October, something happened.....more hits.  And in December, there was a huge jump in people reading the blog. You may laugh at this, but you'd be surprised at what a write on "meth" will do to your blog.  It's incredible the amount of people affected by meth in our communities.  I have another write about it coming up and how I'm going to protect our property from it.   By January, over 5,000 people clicked on this blog.  In February, my blog reached over 6,000 clicks.  I don't know where this is going or where I'm going with all of this except that this has been one of the most positive and uplifting things for me to do in years.  Recently, I've learned how to schedule a blog for release on a day and have been asked if I'd like to do adsense?  Does anyone do this?  I'm not sure I want that clutter on my blog.  From a business perspective, it's a great idea, but that's not what this blog is about.....and that's my stupid teacher thinking interfering with the morality of this idea.  Why do we work? To make money. For me, it's also to leave a mark on this world before I leave it.

Ugh...humidity and my family genes! I've heard Panama is worse.:(  I couldn't deal with the sweat anymore in Nicaragua.  After a bath in the river, I wrapped my head up for a moment and took it off before any of the locals saw me.
Let me share one thing with you on this very personal blog today.....part of why I do this write is because I'm scared I'll be forgotten someday.  It's not death or any of that other stuff that afflicts me.....it's being forgotten.  I envy people's names that are still mentioned today by the means of a city name, museum, car, garden, cabin, or street.  In July of last year, I wrote about a 95 year old woman at Point Beach State Forest who had been an educator of the park for over 30 years.  When she passed, she donated her cabin to Point Beach.  On a bike ride in the forest, I passed her cabin on the trail and remembered the lady that Winnie was.  I was fortunate to have worked with her over the years meeting her first as a kid searching for antlions on the beach and then as an adult later on in life working at the state park myself. We all make a difference in everything that we do, and for many of us, that is expressed by our gardens. So on this first year of blogging, I'd like to thank everyone for reading and sharing their thoughts, adding their expertise, and discussions to these writes. I do my best to present what I know to be accurate and true and I won't write about a plant unless I've experimented with it first.  It has been a wonderful process. The person who started this blog last year is a very different person this year and it feels good to be alive again. I have guest writers lined up, a lunch chat with a famous garden author, several photo shoots on location, and of course, more plant and travel information.  There's so much more to come from Las Aventuras.......

Taken in Italy after a beautiful trip with several friends here....and one of the few times, you'll ever see me wearing pink:)
