Squint

Do your eyes ever "shut down" after long hours on the computer?  Or after long hours on the trail searching for life?  Sometimes I have to squint my eyes to catch what it is I'm searching for.  And if I didn't squint, I might miss some of the fun shots that happen all around me.
What's that with wings on a dark shadowy branch?  What's that glistening thing sticking out on the twig?
Or that rustle in bushes?  Will it bite me?  Is that a lizard or a dinosaur up ahead?  How big do these guys get anyway?
Desert Spiny
And the birds off in the distance......like this American Avocet below.  You can definitely strain your eyes trying to focus on the shot.
During this shoot, I was by a thorny mesquite tree.  I cleared the branches away so I wouldn't poke my eyes out.
Would I get these Black Neck Stilts finally?  Was the lighting finally going to work with the shot?  It was all so far away.....
So my question to you is, "What do you do when your eyes get tired?"  or  "Do your eyes get blurry after many hours of using them with your camera?"

  1. Oh Kreesh, i love that tiny plane with the big morning moon. I saw it even without squinting. I have been getting some scenes like that from my 5th floor window, but i can't get a good shot. Of course it is because i dont have your lenses, haha! There are birds flying on my space too, but i can't get nice shots too, grrrr!

    1. Hey! You don't need my lens!:) Last year I used a point and shoot....granted the shots weren't as clear....but I still got the little buggers:) This camera just makes my job a little easier while I'm out in the field:) Thanks for the nice words.

  2. That's really one thing you appreciate about living in the Deserts southwest and that is Riparian Habitats. Here where I live there is so much rain and water that you become sick of it and a dry warm habitat becomes something longed for again.

    1. I know. I always think about this when I'm abroad or back in my hometown. But get this...last year in Panama, we stayed in the town of Boquete where it rained everyday. I didn't leave for one week!! because it did rain a lot. I left my window open. I walked in the downpours whenever I could. And I read on a veranda in the middle of it getting lost in the sounds of the rain. Sometimes that's how much I crave rain in the desert. Two dislikes with rain. Cloudy weather for more than 2 days. I get depression from the grey skies...sun is required most of the time for me. And mosquitos!!! Hate them little buggers!

  4. I must need new glasses as I seem to be squinting a lot these days. And sometimes my eyes do go blurry at the computer, more often at work. Yet I didn't have to squint to see these images. Love the dragonfly.

  5. (so long as the blogger doesn't favour a black background with white or neon text. Those I boycott.)

    1. Gracias Suz....working my hardest to get better with the camera. The devil is in the details and composition, lighting of the shots. I'm learning:)

  9. You're finding all sorts of wonderful things! I love the dragonfly, the lizard and Black Neck Stilts. After a long time at the computer, it's usually my mouse hand that gets tired, so I do something else for a while.

    1. I figure the both of us will make Tucson look amazing and have some of these bloggers come and visit us soon:) You really have captured some amazing shots this Spring. Those Bobcat shots are still in my mind.....truly some excellent photojournalism from Tucson.

  10. I love the moon and dragonfly shots :) With the computer I have a rest every hour or so and go and do something else for 5 or 10 minutes. With the camera - I think I probably squint like you!

    1. I squint so much with the lens. I use the little glass viewfinder instead of the digi screen. My eyes go crazy after doing it too long.

  11. Wonderful captures, I always enjoy your post. I always like your birds and the critters. Yes, my eyes get blurry and dry. I carry eyes drops to help them feel better. But, I blame it from being on the computer all day at work.

    1. DO you know??!!!! I have been bringing a bottle of eye drops with me as well!!! It has made a HUGE difference. My eye doctor gave me a bottle to use and try out. I totally forgot to mention that I started using them....especially with the heat in full gear. The computer has changed the world, but it's ridiculous the amount of time we all spend on it!

  13. OH YES.... My old eyes do get tired... Between the computer work and the photography, my eyes sometimes tell me to STOP.... Part of my problem is just getting OLD period!!!! Dang it! I really struggle when some blog friends do everything in TINY print... I usually have to blow it up in order to read it...

I've never had to wear glasses ----until I turned 43 and couldn't read without them.. Started wearing the 'cheap' Walgreen's type glasses and have been wearing them ever since. BUT--as I get older, it does get worse... I cannot read a map anymore without a magnifying glass... NOT FUN...

    SO---take care of your eyes...

    1. I've been blind in one eye since I was around 5 years old. The brain switches off that eye while the other compensates for both. A strange disease indeed. But I've managed in life with a good eye doctor. You only really notice when I'm tired and the "blind" eyes crosses because it is tired. I do enjoy glasses however:)
