Un Vaso De Agua

I've been really wanting to do something on aquariums.  I've been to several in my lifetime.  Again, I had a poor camera but I'll try to do my best and capture the fun.  While today's focus is on the Monterey Aquarium in California, I'll be presenting some pics from the Chicago Shedd Aquarium and Acquario di Genoa in Italy. There is something very special about being surrounded by huge glass panels with fish big and small swimming around you.
So I had some fun with my sister and her husband.  They came out to visit and I took them to the California coast for a photo shoot in '98 near Monterey, CA.  I didn't tell them about the rogue wave that pushed itself on shore.  This would become one of my favorite shots ever taken.  My sister's face is priceless.  Today they have this picture framed in their house somewhere:)
I fell in love with the Monterey Bay Aquarium as I had with the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.  But Monterey was special.  Why?  Well, it was here that Star Trek 4 was filmed.  You know....the one about the whales:)
Monterey, Shedd and the Genoa Aquarium all have one thing in common.....dark cool rooms.  Sometimes I just like to sit on the bench and.......stay there for a stretch of time.  But the key for me is to find a place that doesn't have many people around.
This summer, we'll hopefully visit the Shedd Aquarium again.  It has been over 7 years since my last visit to one of these magical places. I like getting older because I learn more and more.  Each time I return for a visit, I "see" things in a new light.  So it'll be fun exploring this wonderful aquarium again.  Coming up on Las Aventuras, more from the garden, space, our Wisconsin adventures, birding, and lots of other fun things!  More tomorrow.....

  2. I agree, Chris. Aquariums are peaceful and serene to watch as the fish gracefully glide through the water.
The hospital here has a huge aquarium in their waiting room because it has a calming effect.

    1. That's such a great idea. It really does have an affect on people. I can't wait to go again. I've been looking forward to some water fun. The Shedd is located right on Lake Michigan. Beautiful building as well!

  4. I've not been to the famous big aquariums yet, but we have a new oceanarium here in Manila, where sharks and manta rays are included. And I've been to Hawaii but maybe it is not as big as what you mentioned.

I love your comment about my tamarind post, how bad your people are to police officers! hahaha! Take care, I wont give you hugs as it is so hot here!

    1. Americans are pretty direct and considered often to be rude:) I can't imagine why we get this name?:) Yes, I completely agree hugging while it's humid is pretty nasty. I had to do it in Panmama last summer and wasn't a fan:)

    1. Fond indeed. I would argue that the Shedd Aquarium is one of THE most amazing aquariums in the world. Monterey would be second.

    1. Diane, we ALMOST went to California this summer until I thought about the crowds and congestion. It's one of the things I hated most about living in California. It's really sad because places like Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Yosemite are quite epic in nature....but sadly, there are too many people in that state to enjoy the experience. So we opted out. Instead we are off to the quiet green forests of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.....and there's nothing like being around family for awhile:)

  7. Aquariums are always a challenge for photographers. Love the picture of your sister and hubby on beach. The art of being in the right place at the right time. :)

    1. hello there! That's the best part of photography....it's never about the shots you want...but about what happens during the experience. And i think that's what I love about it all:)

  10. Love the aquarium in Monterrey, also San Diego, and Monte Carlo, and the small fresh water one in Duesseldorf that got me started on my own aqua-terrarium that for years contained (and raised generations of) most of the European Amphibium species from Greece to Norway...)

    1. I like your project. It sounds like a lot of fun and well quite frankly....cool. Hope you are having a wonderful summer getting some great shots. I've loved following the nesting going on in your area. You have some really cool birds of prey in your area. All my best.

  11. Hi Chris, I enjoy aquariums also. There's a really nice one in Gatlinburg, TN and also one in Chattanooga, TN... When I lived in Texas, I took my grandchildren (who were young then) to an Aquarium Restaurant... It was neat --but we couldn't get the kids to EAT. They just wanted to see all of the fish... ha

    1. I LOVE that kids get so emotionally charged that they can't eat. I remember those days....and the best part, I feel that way again. Sometimes I can't sleep the night before a special event. And I learned something new....there are aquariums in TN....3 things to check out in this area....aquariums, the Smoky Mountains, and meet Betsy and George!! Maybe hike together! I'm sure there's more to do....such a beautiful area you live in....all my best. Chris

  12. I like to visit the aquariums too, they are especially nice when they are not crowded. Great shot of your sister and her hubby, a fun shot. I have been to a few aquariums. Curacao's Sea Aquarium was wonderful and SeaLife Park in Oahu is great. Sea World in Orlando has some cool stuff. I have been to a small one in Monterey, Ca not sure if it is the same one you have pictured. Also, my hometown of Baltimore has the National Aquarium in which i have been to many times.

  13. Very much true:every time we see for a second or more time the same thing we see it with new eyes and discover new things. We will have to go back to visit these great aquariums.

  14. I like the first shot, too, as the happy moment frozen in time and warm, fond memory in heart. Being at the beach where waves come rippling ashore, I feel free and comfortable, and can’t help but regain the childhood spirit. Aquarium is one of my favorite places to visit. I agree with you; whenever I visit, I find something new regardless of age and see things in a new light according to age.

  15. Love the first photo of your sister and her husband :) As you say the more you visit places the more you see! I like to visit places and see them through the changing seasons too. Love the Star Trek 4 connection. Look forward greatly to more posts on this great theme.
