I was fascinated by the coastal forests of Oregon.
It was haunting and remote.
Often times, everything was clouded in mist.
We heard Mountain Quail calling from the darkness.
We also saw signs that a savage people lived in the area. It was a bit scary. I don't think I would have come here alone.
A lumber company regulated this forest but there was no sign that they were there. Occasionally, we saw an abandoned tractor here or there.
We searched for the Sooty Grouse. But no luck.
Photography was difficult but it was there I spotted two very quiet Varied Thrush. Lifers.
A special thank you to Khanh Tran for a fun trek around the states of Washington and Oregon. And to Robert and Khanh for their warm hospitality! And to both Gordon and Khanh for driving! It was a crazy week that went by too quickly.
I will return but it will happen during the summer. For now, it's back to the desert southwest. It's time for a little sunshine:)

DeleteLoved every one of your posts from near our old home territory -- your reasoning thouogh is why we're only there in the summer/fall nowadays. Sorry to inundate you with comments -- I wasn't going to leave on on every post I'd missed, but just couldn't resist, they all spoke to me!!

DeleteI look forward to exploring some of the rain forest areas west of us. Our high desert isn't much different from some areas of AZ but with the Cascades on our doorstep and of course different temps. Every time I see Mt. Jefferson covered in snow and gleaming in the sun, it is thrilling. Glad you were able to get up here and bird!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky. What a beautiful area to road trip! I romanticized this area and while it is beautiful....the clouds and wet damp weather can zap the energy. I bet summer is going to be awesome though!
DeleteWA and OR are both beautiful states to visit (or live in as I do in WA state) on the less rainy side though.
ReplyDeleteThe Varied Thrush was my favorite song when living in the wet PNW. But the gray and rain were depressing.
