A New Year of Beginnings

Hello all!!!  Happy New Year!  Well it will soon be:)  I'm having a blast out in the field on my time off. And it's because of this change in my life that I won't be able to blog everyday like I have for the past 2 years.
Osprey at Kennedy Park, Tucson
It has finally caught up with me and I'm finding that the daily writing etc is impossible:)  I will be posting when I get the chance and of course reading all of your work.  It's one of the reasons why I started blogging .... to network with all of you.
I want to enjoy that part again without worrying about posting once a day.  There's a lot to look forward to next year at Las Aventuras and I am so excited for the schedule coming up, but you'll have to wait and see all the happenings that will be going on.
For now, I wanted to share with you....finally!....a most accidental and wonderful thing....the Osprey.  After many many outings trying to find this bird in Tucson, it came out of nowhere while I was searching for a Horned Grebe.  No Horned Grebe.....but who cares!  The Osprey was the star of the show.
I also got closer to the Western Grebe than I have been able to since my search for them.  Las Aventuras has a trek coming up from outside of the state of Arizona.  I hope you'll join me as we discover even more birds than before.......I'm not going anywhere:)  I'll just be out in the field A WHOLE lot more:)
Western Grebe
My goal for this next year is to add about 150 more birds to my list.  I think it's achievable.
So how about something new?  How about the Hooded Mergansers!  There were 18 on this day.
Hooded Mergansers at Sam Lena Park
The males(or drakes) look like aliens while the females look quite the opposite....but still....striking.  Both genders made me do a double take.  They look so different from each other!  How could they both possibly be the same bird??!!!  And yet they are.
Las Aventuras isn't going anywhere in the blogoshere, it's just doing what it does best....exploring strange new life and new civilizations and boldly forcing me to go where I've never gone before.  Happy New Year everyone!

I can understand not being able to post on your blog everyday. I wish I had more time to go out looking for the birds. Awesome series on the Osprey. And I love the Hoodies, they are pretty ducks! Great shots, Chris! I wish you all the best in 2013, Happy New Years!

Happy New Year to you too Chris!

Well done on the Osprey - such a magnificent bird - and great photos.

I don't know how you have found the time to blog every day - as posts like yours take some planning. So glad to hear though you will still be posting, if less frequently, and looking forward to reading of your travels and wildlife adventures in 2013.

I did daily posts for the 12 Days of Christmas, last year and the year before. No more, that is too much like hard work. Enjoy posting as and when, and I will enjoy reading as they come.
Happy New Year!

You are smart to do this... I did it a couple of years ago... Used to blog everyday... Then started taking weekends off...THEN--went to 3 days a week blogging. That seems to work for me. It gives me time to do all of the other things in my life --and yet I can still keep up with blog friends--and still do some blogging... Hope it works for you.

Happy New Year.
Hugs,
Betsy

Wonderful Osprey images Chris. I'm a volunteer on a local Osprey project, so I'm seeing Ospreys all the time in the summer, but I've not go any images that come anywhere near yours!

I've yet to see a Hooded Merganser, although birds of dubious origin can be found in UK. The drakes are surreal!

Happy New Year!!!

I cannot begin to tell you how envious I am of the Osprey shots Chris, how fabulous they are, lucky, lucky you! Sounds like a busy year ahead for you, your enthusiasm has always been so appealing..good luck with your search for the extra birds to add to your list, I have no doubts at all that you'll find them. Here's wishing you a very happy, healthy and exciting New Year!

Thought you might enjoy this. Or maybe not. The bird count down your way is much lower this year.

Christmas count yields lower bird numbers

Amazing sightings and images! The Hooded Mergansers are really cute. I always enjoy your posts and learn something new with each one. Wishing you much happiness in the New Year!

So wonderful! LOVE the osprey shots! Too cool! Glad you are sticking with the blogging...I often missed a post or two when you were posting every day. I just can't keep up! I think I will have a better chance to visit you if the posts don't come as fast. :-) It is more important to live life than to document it, and I think you have a lot of living on the agenda for this year...can't wait for the documentation part! :-)

Watching an Osprey fish has to be one of nature's great thrills Chris, they are stupendous creatures.

Przepraszam. Twoje ptaki są wspaniałe i podglądaj je w 2013 roku. Pozdrawiam.
More than once I thought a blog a lot of time you spend writing a post every day. I'm not surprised that it slows down. I had a bit of grief, that they do not zaglądałeś to me lately, so I looked, but did not write comments. I'm sorry that it did. I was a little understanding. Sorry. Your birds are wonderful and preview them in 2013. Yours.

Hi Giga, you've been on my mind. I will be back again this week visiting everyone and look forward to a normal schedule again. But don't worry, I haven't forgotten you or others. There's a big thing going on right now in the birder world and while it's not a competition, it's incredibly time consuming. It's called a Big January and the task is to count as many different species as you can around the world. I hope you had a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year! I'll be catching up all this week.....I can't wait to meet up with everyone again:)

According to my eyes you had a fabulous year of birding and hiking.
Counting birds with other bird lovers is so fun but also exhausting.
Love your photos, Chris.
